India is making significant strides in its renewable energy sector, as revealed in a parliamentary session on Wednesday. With 183.19 gigawatt (GW) of non-fossil fuel-based projects currently under implementation, the nation showcases its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
As of February 28, 2025, India has already installed 222.86 GW of non-fossil power capacity. The Minister of State for Power, New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, elaborated that an additional 77.21 GW of projects have been tendered. Part of this green initiative is the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, benefiting 10.32 lakh residential households with rooftop solar plants as of March 17, 2025.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme in February 2024, with a budget of Rs 75,021 crore. The goal is to solarise 20 lakh households by October, contributing toward India's ambitious objective of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil power capacity by 2030.
