India is poised for a dramatic increase in natural gas demand, potentially doubling its consumption by 2030, according to Anil Kumar Jain, chairperson of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB). This surge is mainly attributed to the expansion of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network and supportive government policies.

Jain disclosed that the current consumption of natural gas stands at 190 Million Standard Cubic Meters per Day (MMSCMD) and could rise significantly to 297 MMSCMD in a moderate growth scenario. Under optimal conditions, the demand can elevate to 365 MMSCMD by 2030. He emphasized the need for continuous infrastructure investments and policy enhancements.

The PNGRB's plans include developing 17,000 CNG stations and 12 crore domestic pipeline connections by 2030. However, Jain pointed out the challenges posed by gas pricing and the exclusion from the GST regime. He urged state governments to slash taxes on natural gas to facilitate its adoption. A recent PNGRB report projects continued growth in the CGD sector, indicating its pivotal role in shaping India's energy future.
