In a massive crackdown on illegal betting activities, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) executed searches at 60 locations spanning Chhattisgarh, Bhopal, Kolkata, and Delhi on Wednesday. The operation targeted premises connected to various high-profile figures, including politicians, senior bureaucrats, and key personnel linked to the controversial Mahadev Book.
The Mahadev Book, an online betting platform promoted by Dubai-based Ravi Uppal and Saurabh Chandrakar, has been under scrutiny for allegedly paying protection money to public officials to facilitate its illicit operations. Chandrakar was apprehended in Dubai in November 2024, following an Interpol Red Corner notice prompted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The case, initially registered by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in Raipur, was transferred to the CBI for a comprehensive investigation into the roles of senior public officials and others implicated. Amidst ongoing searches, digital and documentary evidence incriminating those involved has been recovered, with further action anticipated.
Among those caught in the investigation's spotlight is former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. His residences were searched by the CBI before his planned departure to Delhi for an All India Congress Committee meeting. The move has sparked significant media attention and political discourse.
