In a significant move to bolster electoral processes, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar inaugurated the maiden training program for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) at the India International Institute of Democracy & Election Management in New Delhi. Accompanied by Election Commissioner Dr. Vivek Joshi, the initiative seeks to train over one lakh BLOs, aiming to position them as Assembly Level Master Trainers (ALMTs) in the years to come. This training endeavor is crucial for strengthening the network of BLOs nationwide, acting as the primary interface between the 100 crore electors and the Election Commission.
According to an official release, the program will be executed in phases, initially focusing on states heading to polls soon. Currently, 109 BLOs from Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam, along with several Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and District Election Officers (DEOs), are participating in a two-day intensive training session. Participants will gain insights on their responsibilities as defined by the RP Act 1950 and the Registration of Elector Rules 1960, along with instructions from the Commission. The training will also introduce them to IT applications designed to enhance their work efficiency.
Emphasizing the critical role of BLOs and EROs, CEC Gyanesh Kumar highlighted the necessity for state governments to appoint senior and locally-resident officers as EROs and BLOs. He reaffirmed that only Indian citizens, aged 18 and above, can be registered as electors. Furthermore, he instructed CEOs, DEOs, and EROs to convene all-party meetings to tackle issues related to electoral roll updates. Any complaints against EROs or BLOs will be strictly addressed to ensure accuracy and integrity in the electoral process. The Commission stands committed to safeguarding the interests of nearly 100 crore electors.
