Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has officially signed the state budget documents for the fiscal year 2025-26, setting the stage for its unveiling. This marks the fourth budget under the Aam Aadmi Party's leadership since assuming office in 2022. The budget is crafted to propel development forward, with significant focus areas highlighted.

Reports indicate a marked emphasis on enhancing education and healthcare services while intensifying efforts to curb drug addiction. A significant highlight is the proposed Drug Census, a first for the state, reflecting AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal's recent public statements on the matter. Anticipated measures include the deployment of Home Guards to secure borders against drug inflow, backed by specific budget allocations for drug prevention strategies.

The budget outlines plans to boost the number of Emergency Response Vehicles and fortify the 112 Emergency Number service. In a strategic shift against drug menace, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, alongside DGP Gaurav Yadav, launched the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign. This initiative, since its inception on March 1, 2025, has witnessed the arrest of nearly 4,000 drug smugglers and substantial contraband seizures. Authorities are directed to thoroughly identify key drug suppliers to dismantle the narcotics trade's supply chain.
