The proposed establishment of a foreign liquor shop at Harshil, a burgeoning tourist locale in Uttarkashi, has been suspended after local community backlash, District Magistrate Meherban Singh Bisht confirmed. The decision aligns with objections raised by residents of the emerging hill station.

In a formal communication dated March 25, 2025, Uttarkashi's District Excise Officer, Sanjay Kumar, informed the District Information Officer about the suspension as per orders from the District Magistrate. This development follows news coverage highlighting the people's opposition to the liquor shop.

During a recent visit to Uttarakhand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the public in Harshil. He outlined the government's ongoing efforts to develop tourism and rehabilitate villages vacated during the 1962 India-China conflict, emphasizing that border areas should be viewed as priority development zones under the 'Vibrant Village' program.
