In a move highlighting the city's appreciation for stellar achievements, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation on Tuesday passed a resolution to rename the road in front of the ISRO office in Janakipuram after renowned Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams. The resolution was unanimously approved, as confirmed by City Mayor Sushma Kharkwal.
Mayor Kharkwal stated that Corporator Ranjit Singh proposed the idea, which gained unanimous support. Williams, celebrated for her remarkable contributions to space exploration, recently returned to Earth with NASA's Crew-9 team after an extended nine-month space mission on the International Space Station.
Sunita Williams, along with fellow NASA astronauts Nick Hague, Butch Wilmore, and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, completed their mission in a collaborative effort with SpaceX. Initially planned as a brief expedition, the mission was prolonged due to complications with the Boeing Starliner capsule. Upon their return, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Williams, praising the crew's determination and acknowledging the efforts of all involved in ensuring their safe journey back to Earth.
