In a bold step to enhance public safety and boost emergency response, Punjab Police has distributed 165 new smartphones to its Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs), underlining an ongoing commitment to leveraging technology. Spearheaded by Special Director General of Police (DGP) Law and Order Arpit Shukla, this initiative aims at streamlining operations under the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112), according to an official release.

The smartphones, equipped with advanced 5G technology and dual SIM capabilities, will bolster the existing communication infrastructure of Mobile Data Terminals (MDTs) in the state's 258 ERVs, which include 241 four-wheelers and 17 two-wheelers. As expressed by Special DGP Shukla, the dual-device system is expected to significantly reduce response times, ensuring continuous connectivity even if one network fails.

Moreover, the integration of new communication channels into the ERSS-112, like chatbots and social media, promises a transformative impact, with WhatsApp integration on the horizon. Helplines, including 1098, 101, 108, and 181, are set to merge into a unified system alongside a forthcoming heat map feature, which will identify crime hotspots for more precise policing. Anticipating a need for further expansion, Punjab Police also plans to enhance the fleet of ERVs to improve outreach and reduce response times across the state.

Each ERV is outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment, including dash cameras, fire extinguishers, and GPS systems, reflecting the police department's comprehensive approach to public safety. These advancements, along with hands-on MDT training for 2,100 police personnel, underscore the commitment to cutting-edge solutions. This initiative is set to streamline Punjab's emergency response capabilities, ensuring a swift and coordinated effort to public safety challenges.
