Christian Abégan, a renowned advocate for sustainable food systems, has long been at the forefront of promoting African gastronomy and its role in tackling food insecurity and malnutrition. With over 35 years of experience in the culinary world, Abégan has dedicated his career to raising awareness about the importance of healthy, locally sourced ingredients and their power to combat hunger. As a newly appointed Chef Advocate for the World Food Programme (WFP), he will continue this mission on a global scale, bringing his expertise to promote food security initiatives and sustainable practices.

Abégan's distinguished career is marked by numerous accolades, including the prestigious Diplôme d'Honneur de l’Institut de la Gastronomie Française, the Afro-Caribbean Excellence Trophy, and recognition as a published author. His deep-rooted passion for using food as a tool for health, culture, and community development has shaped his influential advocacy. As WFP’s Chef Advocate, Abégan is committed to elevating global food security efforts, particularly in West and Central Africa, a region suffering from an acute food security and nutrition crisis.

As part of his role with WFP, Abégan will focus on several key areas, including promoting fortified foods, advocating for homegrown school meals, and mobilizing political and social decision-makers to prioritize food security issues. By leveraging his culinary knowledge, he will share techniques that empower communities to prepare nutritious meals using locally available resources, aiming to foster long-term sustainability and resilience.

"Food has the power to change lives. It is not just about filling stomachs, but nourishing bodies and minds," Abégan stated. "I am honored to join WFP's mission, which shares my belief that everyone deserves access to nutritious and affordable food, regardless of their background or location. This role comes with immense responsibility, and I embrace it with determination and passion."

Abégan’s partnership with WFP is especially timely, as the region faces an alarming food security crisis. Projections indicate that over 52 million individuals in Western Africa are expected to face acute hunger by mid-2025, with the region experiencing rising levels of conflict, displacement, and climate-related disasters. Devastating floods in 2024 have already displaced millions, further exacerbating food scarcity. Adding to this challenge, 8 out of 10 children under two lack access to diverse diets, contributing to the region’s high rates of child stunting—an issue that is of particular concern to WFP.

The WFP has been playing a pivotal role in providing immediate relief to those affected by the crisis while simultaneously working to build local food solutions. Abégan’s involvement is expected to boost the organization's impact, especially through initiatives that link smallholder farmers with school feeding programs and promote the production of nutritious, local foods. This dual approach, combining emergency aid with long-term solutions, aims to reduce malnutrition and hunger in a sustainable way.

Over the past seven years, Chef Abégan has actively collaborated with WFP, participating in high-profile campaigns such as the "Healthy Not Hungry" campaign in Burkina Faso and WFP’s "Fight Famine" initiative across the Sahel. His dynamic presence and ability to engage diverse audiences have made him a highly effective advocate for WFP’s mission to address global hunger and nutrition challenges.

"Chef Christian Abégan’s expertise and creativity in the kitchen bring a powerful synergy to WFP’s mission in the region," said Margot Van Der Velden, WFP’s Regional Director for Western Africa. "Through culinary innovation, advocacy, and capacity building, his contributions will help us reach communities most in need and create lasting change. Partnerships like this are essential in our fight against hunger and malnutrition."

Abégan’s work with WFP is not only a call for immediate action but a longer-term vision for fostering food security through education, empowerment, and local food systems. His role highlights the intersection of food, culture, and nutrition as key components in solving one of the world’s most pressing challenges: hunger. Through his efforts, Abégan aims to inspire others to see food as not just a necessity, but a powerful tool for social change and better health.
