In a sorrowful development at the SLBC tunnel collapse site in Nagarkurnool, Telangana, rescue teams have recovered another body, according to official reports. The remains have been taken to Nagarkurnool General Hospital for a post-mortem examination, as search operations continue for possible additional victims.
The tunnel, which collapsed on February 22, entrapped eight workers initially. Rescue personnel have been tirelessly working to ensure no one else remains inside. The body of Gurpreet Singh, one of the trapped workers, was found on March 9. Telangana's Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, has announced a compensation package of Rs 25 lakhs for the families of the deceased workers.
The rescue operations have seen increased deployment, with robotic teams, 110 rescue workers, and Anvi Robo experts being part of the mission. Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Telangana's Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplies, Uttam Kumar Reddy, has called the incident a national disaster and stated the use of cutting-edge global technologies to tackle the challenges posed by the 14-kilometre-long tunnel's collapsed section.
The site also witnessed the assistance of two specially trained cadaver dogs from the Kerala Police, dispatched on March 6, to aid the search. The collapse occurred four days after resumption of construction work, affecting a three-meter stretch of the tunnel near Domalapenta in Nagarkurnool. Some workers managed to escape, but eight remained trapped, prompting ongoing rescue efforts.
