In a significant move towards sustainable energy, Nagaland has launched its Solar Mission to implement the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The mission was discussed in a meeting led by the state's Chief Secretary, Dr. J Alam, in the Conference Hall of the Chief Secretary on Monday.
The Union Cabinet, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm, greenlit the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana on February 29, 2024. This ambitious initiative aims to install rooftop solar panels and provide up to 300 units of free electricity monthly to one crore households. Consumers will benefit from reduced monthly electricity bills through lesser grid supply reliance. To ease the financial burden of installing rooftop solar systems (RTS), the Indian government is offering subsidies from 60% to 54% for RTS installations ranging from 1KW to 3KW.
Nagaland's state government plans to complement these efforts by providing additional state subsidies that range from 36% to 31% for the same RTS installations. A budget allocation of Rs 10 crore has been reserved for the financial year 2025-26 to support this scheme. As a result, the total subsidy will range from 96% to 85% of the benchmark cost, significantly lowering costs for residents. The scheme's implementation will involve a Solar Mission Team at the Directorate Level and a Solar Mission Cell at the Secretariat Level, with key officials from the Power Department in attendance during the initial meeting.
