In a significant move to curb unlawful activities, the Central Government has empowered state governments to exercise its powers under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, against the Awami Action Committee (AAC), deemed an unlawful association. A notification published in the Gazette of India announced this decision, allowing states to invoke Sections 7 and 8 of the UAPA to seize properties linked to the banned organization and restrict its activities.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued the notification, emphasizing the importance of state-level swift action to combat the AAC's terrorist activities. This decentralization is crucial for states where AAC operates actively. The ministry earlier declared the Jammu and Kashmir-based AAC as an unlawful association, imposing a five-year ban citing its involvement in activities that threaten India's sovereignty, integrity, and security.
The Central Government's decision underscores its commitment to strengthening internal security. The directive expects state authorities to work closely with central agencies to enforce the ban on AAC, which has been involved in mobilizing funds for secessionist and terrorist operations. The AAC, led by Umar Farooq, faces multiple charges including inciting violence and anti-national speeches, further aggravating national security concerns.
