The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a significant breakthrough in wildlife crime by apprehending two individuals illegally possessing 65 endangered turtles, as stated in a Monday press release. This operation, conducted alongside the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), highlights the alarming trade in protected species.
The CBI's letter dated March 24 reveals that the accused were caught with 50 Indian Roofed Turtles (Pangshura tecta) and 15 Spotted Pond Turtles (Geoclemys hamiltonii), both listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The seized animals have been transferred to the Delhi Zoo to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
Ongoing investigations aim to trace the origins of the wildlife, uncover backward and forward linkages, and track the financial network involved in this illegal trade. The operation underscores the active measures being taken to combat wildlife trafficking in India.
