The Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden has recently expanded its biodiversity by acquiring 15 new species through an animal exchange programme with Chhatbir Zoo in Chandigarh. The initiative, overseen by the Central Zoo Authority, has introduced animals including the Black Buck, Golden Pheasant, Emu, and Java Sparrow among others, to the zoo.

According to Ashwini Kumar, Divisional Forest Officer of the Assam State Zoo, the exchange programme with Chhatbir Zoo has enriched the zoo's collection. Species added include the Kalij Pheasant, Comb Duck, and Chukar Partridge. Kumar highlighted ongoing development to boost educational awareness with the inclusion of new species.

Modernization efforts, as announced by the Assam Chief Minister, are underway at the zoo. A new veterinary hospital-cum-rescue and rehabilitation center is planned, along with renovations to older enclosures. Visitor amenities are also being upgraded as part of the zoo's dedication to wildlife conservation and education.
