In a significant move to alleviate Syria's electricity woes, Qatar has announced plans to supply the embattled country with natural gas, aiming to generate 400 megawatts of power daily, according to the Syrian state-run news agency SANA.
Syria's interim Electricity Minister Omar Shaqrouq detailed that the Qatari gas would double the country's daily electricity supply to four hours. The gas will be delivered to the Deir Ali power station in Damascus via a pipeline through Jordan, thanks to a partnership involving Qatar, Jordan, and the United Nations Development Program.
As the international community remains cautious of Syria's new leadership post-Assad, with the U.S. hesitant to lift sanctions completely, this initiative marks a crucial step towards addressing Syria's infrastructure challenges and its ongoing reconstruction needs after years of civil war.
