The Tamil Nadu government has ignited a new controversy with its decision to replace the Indian Rupee symbol with the Tamil letter 'Ru' in its Budget logo for the fiscal year 2025-26. Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission Executive Vice Chairman J Jeyaranjan confirmed that the decision was motivated by a reluctance to use the Devnagari script.
This symbolic change has drawn criticism from opposition parties, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused the state's ruling DMK party of disrespecting national symbols. BJP's Tamil Nadu Chief, K Annamalai, criticized the move, noting that the Rupee symbol was designed by a Tamilian and should be a matter of pride.
BJP leader Tamilisai Soundarajan also questioned the DMK on the timing of this decision, arguing it distracts from the government's failures. The ongoing controversy underscores the political tussles surrounding language, identity, and governance in Tamil Nadu.
