The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has recently issued an Orange Alert for Thoothukudi district, anticipating extensive rainfall on March 11 and 12. This unexpected weather has disrupted salt production which had just resumed, leaving local producers in a dire situation as operations have halted completely due to the incessant rain.

As a precautionary step against the forecasted heavy rains, fishing boats remain anchored, while the IMD predicts light thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall across several districts including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and more. Authorities have cautioned residents about potential waterlogging and slippery roads due to the precipitation.

Moreover, fishermen are advised against venturing into susceptible areas as squally weather persists, with wind speeds ranging from 35 kmph to 55 kmph along the south Kerala coast and other adjoining regions. Meanwhile, parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to experience thunderstorms, while Assam and Meghalaya will face similar conditions shortly.
