More than one million Indian households now benefit from solar energy through the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, as announced by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. This ambitious initiative stands as the world's largest domestic rooftop solar program, aiming to transform India's energy sector.
Launched on February 15, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the initiative has been allocated a budget of Rs 75,021 crore to ensure free electricity by installing rooftop solar panels across the country. The scheme embodies sustainability, affordability, and self-reliance in energy consumption.
Under the program, discoms act as state implementation agencies, ensuring setup processes like net meter availability and timely inspections adhere to the plan. With a financial provision of Rs 4,950 crore, the program builds on the groundwork of the previous GCRT Phase II initiative.
