The Tripura government is set to amplify its bamboo production footprint, aiming to expand the area dedicated to industrial bamboo from 461.32 hectares to a whopping 45,000 hectares within the next five years. This ambitious plan, driven by the state's abundant bamboo resources, seeks to solidify Tripura's role as a key supplier for bamboo industries.
The plan, detailed by Tripura Bamboo Mission's Additional Mission Director, Subhash Chandra Das, emphasizes increasing bamboo plantations to meet the escalating demand from both existing and new bamboo-based industries. Das highlighted the importance of improving transportation logistics by focusing plantations on private lands near urban areas to avoid forest department restrictions.
This expansive initiative is powered through a convergence of MGNREGA funds and involves various government entities. The setup of a new Integrated Bamboo Park in Unakoti district and the mobilization of farmers to ensure sustainable income streams parallel the state’s commitment to turning bamboo into a significant economic contributor alongside other cash crops like rubber.
