In a dramatic turn of events, the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Telangana's Nagarkurnool district collapsed on Saturday, trapping eight workers inside. The incident took place during the morning shift, while about 50 workers were engaged in their tasks. Several workers managed to escape, but eight remain unaccounted for, prompting an urgent response from authorities.
Telangana Minister for Irrigation Uttam Kumar Reddy and Minister Jupally Krishna Rao were quick to reach the site at Domalapenta, overseeing the operations and assessing the gravity of the situation. The ministers held a review meeting with senior officials and have mandated an intensification of the rescue efforts. Rescue teams are actively working to free those trapped, with medical personnel ensuring a continuous supply of oxygen to the affected area.
The arrival of the Singareni rescue team has bolstered efforts, providing additional oxygen support for the challenging operation. As of now, the trapped workers are believed to be located approximately 13 kilometers inside the tunnel. Special rescue teams from Hyderabad have also been deployed, enhancing the collaborative efforts underway to ensure the safety of those involved. The authorities have noted that the trapped individuals hail from various regions, including Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Despite the seriousness of the situation, there have been no formal complaints from the workers' families.
