Prayagraj is witnessing an enormous influx of devotees for the ongoing Mahakumbh, prompting the Prayagraj Mela Authority to intensify sanitation efforts. In collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh government, advanced waste management systems and real-time monitoring technology have been deployed to maintain cleanliness during the event, according to Akanksha Rana, the cleanliness chief.

An elaborate sanitation plan, launched at the fair's inception, has seen the acquisition of 120 tippers and compactors, alongside 25,000 strategically placed dustbins emptied three times a day. Over 14,000 metric tonnes of waste have already been dispatched to the Baswar Treatment Plant, highlighting an expected surge in waste beyond 20,000 metric tonnes, according to officials.

A state-of-the-art ICT-based system using mobile apps ensures real-time monitoring. Volunteers provide feedback collected through QR code scans in public restrooms, with data processed in a control room to facilitate swift action. To eliminate plastic waste, eco-friendly alternatives, such as kulhars and jute bags, have been distributed, complemented by stringent branding regulations.
