A burst water supply line in the Kharghuli area of Guwahati, Assam, led to considerable damage on Thursday, inundating multiple houses, vehicles, and business establishments. At least 20 families bore the brunt of the incident, prompting a swift response from police, Fire & Emergency Services, and district administration officials to manage the crisis effectively.
Local resident Sidheswar Deka recounted the harrowing experience, mentioning his family, including a child, was at home when the pipeline burst unexpectedly. Their home was flooded, inflicting damage on various household items and personal vehicles. Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, made a visit to assess the affected area, calling for a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the rupture.
This incident harkens back to a similar occurrence in the same vicinity last year, which resulted in a fatality and damage to over 40 houses. Saikia emphasized the necessity for action by the Human Rights Commission, citing past assurances of the installation of an auto cut-off device meant to alert authorities of water leakage - a promise yet unfulfilled. Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, present at the site, assured locals that experts are actively investigating this latest disruption.
