Tension in the Baltic: Finland Seizes Tanker Over Power Cable Damage
Finland's power grid operator, Fingrid, has requested the seizure of the Eagle S oil tanker by a Helsinki court after the Estlink 2 electricity cable suffered damage. The undersea cable, connecting Finland and Estonia, and several telecom lines were believed to be harmed by the tanker's anchor. Investigations continue.
Finland's power grid operator, Fingrid, announced on Thursday its legal move to secure damages through the seizure of the Eagle S oil tanker. This follows a damaging incident involving the Estlink 2 electricity cable connecting Finland and Estonia.
The undersea cable suffered damages on December 25, allegedly from the Eagle S dragging its anchor on the seabed, along with four telecommunications lines. Finnish authorities inspected the tanker immediately, suspecting its involvement.
This event has raised concerns among Baltic nations amidst a pattern of infrastructure damage since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. NATO has committed to increasing its regional presence. The owner, Caravella LLC FZ from the UAE, has yet to comment on Finland's legal action.
