Transdniestria Faces Energy Crisis Amid Gas Supply Halt
The breakaway Moldovan region of Transdniestria has cut heating and hot water supplies to households following a halt in Russian gas supplies via Ukraine. This move comes after the expiration of a transit deal, affecting many locals except critical facilities like hospitals.
The Moldovan region of Transdniestria is facing an energy crisis as it cuts household heating and hot water supplies. The disruption occurred after Russia halted gas supplies via Ukraine, coinciding with the end of a transit agreement between the two countries.
Transdniestria, a pro-Russian enclave that split from Moldova after the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991, had relied on Russian gas transported through Ukraine. The cessation of this supply has left many without essential utilities, causing concerns ahead of the colder months.
Tirasteploenergo, the local energy company, announced that heating reductions commenced at 7 a.m. local time. Despite the widespread cuts, essential services like hospitals were maintained to ensure continued operation.
