Delhi is experiencing an unprecedented spike in electricity demand this winter, with a record-setting 5,213 MW peak reached in December, according to discom officials. This milestone marks the first time the capital's December power demand has surpassed 5,000 MW.
State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) reports indicate that the demand spiked to 5,213 MW Tuesday morning, climbing past the previous day's record of 5,046 MW. Previous Decembers saw peaks of 4,884 MW in 2023, and 4,964 MW in 2022, reflecting a growing trend of higher winter power usage.
In response, Delhi's energy providers are employing green energy strategies and advanced forecasting tools, such as AI and machine learning, to efficiently manage the heightened demand. BRPL and BYPL have met their respective regional demands, with BSES anticipating that 53 per cent of their 3,900 MW demand will be fulfilled via sustainable sources.
