In a heartwarming rescue operation, an elephant calf that was separated from its mother has been given a new lease on life by the forest department staff in Coimbatore. The young pachyderm has been rehoused at the Theppakadu Elephant Camp, following the directives of the Tamil Nadu Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.
The calf, only a few months old, was found wandering near Thudiyalur in the Varapalayam area. Forest officials had been trying to reunite the calf with its mother until it was confirmed that the mother had died. Subsequently, attempts to integrate the calf with another elephant herd in the region also did not succeed over the course of a week.
Assessing the calf's physical condition prompted the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Wildlife Conservation Officer to order its transfer to Theppakadu for proper care. Transported in a vehicle from Coimbatore, the calf underwent examination by forest veterinarians and a traditional 'pooja' was performed. The camp, with the assistance of Adivasi herders, will ensure the calf's well-being. (ANI)
