BJP leader Dilip Saikia has criticized the Congress for what he describes as 'nasty politics' over the memorial plans for the late former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. Singh, credited for leading India's economic liberalization, passed away last week, leaving a legacy of substantial contributions to the nation's growth.
Saikia lamented Congress's actions during the mourning period, emphasizing that such behavior was unexpected when the nation sought to honor Singh's legacy. 'He was a Prime Minister of our motherland, and we have great respect for him, regardless of his party affiliation,' Saikia remarked.
In response to the situation, Congress had pushed for Singh's last rites to be conducted at a designated resting place, deemed a fitting tribute to 'the great son of India.' The government assured Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Singh's family that arrangements for the memorial are underway, requiring the formation of a trust and allocation of space.
Adding to the political tension, Saikia also addressed Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav's recent comments. Yadav had taken a jibe at the excavation work in Uttar Pradesh by implying a Shivling might be found at the Chief Minister's residence, suggesting political dramatization of such discoveries.
Amid these developments, Congress leader Pawan Khera criticized the Central government for conducting Singh's last rites at Nigambodh Ghat, questioning whether this decision disrespected the Sikh community or was a slight against Congress. He urged the government to reflect on the appropriateness of their actions.
