The Defence Ministry has fortified its naval capabilities with the signing of two significant contracts, amounting to nearly Rs 2,867 crore, aimed at enhancing conventional submarine endurance and integrating electronic heavy weight torpedoes (EHWT) aboard Kalvari-class submarines.

The first contract, valued at Rs 1,990 crore, was inked with Mumbai's Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, while the second, involving Naval Group, France, accounts for Rs 877 crore. Both agreements were formalized in New Delhi, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The indigenous development of Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will significantly boost submarine endurance while contributing to the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, generating substantial employment. The integration of EHWT will enhance the offensive capabilities of Indian Navy's Kalvari-class submarines.
