On Wednesday, Katra in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed widespread protests against the proposed Rs 250-crore ropeway project meant to improve accessibility to the Vaishno Devi shrine. The town observed a shutdown, disrupting normal life as the Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti led a mass protest against this development.
The Samiti, representing shopkeepers, pony operators, and palanquin owners, argues that the ropeway would devastate local businesses. They are pressing for the project's cancellation, claiming it endangers the livelihoods of over 60,000 families, with widespread participation from hoteliers, laborers, and transporters joining the cause.
While the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board considers the project beneficial for senior citizens and children, locals, supported by political and social organizations, demand a written assurance for its cessation. Protests intensified as previous promises of a December resolution went unfulfilled, prompting hunger strikes and renewed demonstrations.
