Published by the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Environmental Defense Fund, the report underscores the need for climate-resilient practices to address current challenges.
Despite a significant rise in the female bovine population, India's milk yield per cow is only two-thirds of the global average, and climate change exacerbates challenges like heat stress and water scarcity for farmers. As the third largest methane emitter, India must prioritize low-emission practices to mitigate environmental impacts.
To support smallholder farmers, the report recommends accessible extension services, robust feed quality, and improved infrastructure. It also emphasizes the need for better breeding management through artificial insemination and good animal husbandry practices to enhance health and productivity across the sector.
