The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in six police stations across five districts in Manipur. This move, effective immediately and lasting until March 31, 2025, is aimed at addressing the well-coordinated operation by security forces in a state riddled with ethnic violence.
The decision follows an extensive review of Manipur's security situation involving consultations with key stakeholders. Officials report persistent tensions due to ethnic violence, including sporadic gunfire, particularly between Bishnupur and Churachandpur, as well as Imphal East, Kangpokpi, Imphal West, and Jiribam. Insurgent groups are believed to be actively participating in violent acts in these areas.
The notification from the MHA underscores the necessity of imposing AFSPA in specific police stations, namely Sekmai, Lamsang, Lamlai, Jiribam, Leimakhong, and Moirang, to facilitate coordinated security operations that aim to stabilize the region and suppress insurgent activities.
