In response to the alarming pollution levels in Delhi, Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced on Thursday that the government will not yet enforce the third phase of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-III). The decision came after a meeting conducted by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) concerning GRAP-III, which is typically enacted when pollution reaches the 'severe' category. Under this plan, construction activities are halted, in-person classes for young children may be suspended, and greater use of public transportation is encouraged.

Minister Rai stated that weather forecasts indicate potential improvements in air quality, reducing the need for GRAP-III. Nevertheless, instructions have been reissued to all departments to strictly adhere to GRAP-II provisions to maintain control over Delhi's pollution. "We are actively monitoring the situation to avoid escalating to GRAP-III by strictly implementing GRAP-II," Rai asserted during a press conference. "However, if conditions worsen, the government is prepared to enforce stricter measures to protect the public."

Despite the AQI in Delhi entering the 'severe' category for a second consecutive day, Minister Rai attributed increased pollution to factors like falling temperatures and decreased wind speeds. He expressed hope that predicted weather changes, including rising temperatures and increased wind activity, would help disperse pollutants and improve air quality from 'severe' to 'very poor' levels. The recent spike in pollution coincides with post-Diwali and unusual dense fog conditions, contributing to challenging air quality in the capital.
