On November 21, 2024, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) will convene its 26th session in New Delhi to discuss the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. This upcoming meeting underscores the committee's commitment to overhauling the existing regulations with significant reforms.
The Ministry of Minority Affairs is expected to present crucial insights during this meeting. Previously, the committee gathered in Bhubaneshwar on November 11. Meanwhile, a previously scheduled study tour to Kolkata, Patna, and Lucknow has been deferred, as several MPs requested a postponement due to concurrent election campaigns.
The ongoing amendments to the Waqf Act, 1995, known for its controversial history involving mismanagement, are poised to introduce digitisation, enforce stricter audits, and enhance transparency. These changes aim to resolve issues related to corruption and unauthorized property settlements. The committee's meetings include discussions with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, aiming for a holistic approach to reforming the management of waqf properties.
