On Wednesday, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced proactive measures by the Himachal Pradesh government to bolster eco-tourism, aiming to immerse tourists in the state's untamed landscapes while safeguarding natural resources. The initiative seeks to involve local communities, generating jobs, and spreading awareness about ecosystem conservation.
The state has embraced recent amendments to the Forest Conservation Act, 2023, to sustainably back eco-tourism efforts. Sukhu noted that the Eco-Tourism Policy, first instituted in 2017, has been revised to align with these amendments. The updated policy encourages community-based eco-tourism models, emphasizing activities that benefit local communities and advocate sustainable practices.
To maintain consistent growth, the state government is streamlining eco-tourism efforts across Himachal Pradesh, establishing a centralized mechanism for coordinated planning and execution. Tourism stands as a vital economic pillar, with the state committed to enhancing its development while upholding environmental integrity. Sukhu highlighted that eco-friendly tourism is pivotal for sustainable progress, enabling tourists to relish the state's natural beauty.
Despite attracting around 2 crore visitors annually, many miss experiencing the rich bio-cultural diversity. The state is working to eliminate obstacles, ensuring every visitor enjoys a memorable stay. Approved initiatives include trekking, camping, bird watching, and adventure sports, with new eco-tourism sites and routes catering to safety and preferences.
These initiatives aim to boost the state's economy by conserving forest resources, creating local employment, and promoting eco-friendly tourism. Sukhu reiterated the government's commitment to sustainable development, conservation, and enriching tourism experiences for visitors while benefitting local communities.
