The Delhi Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has taken decisive action by ordering the immediate appointment of 2,346 Home Guards who have cleared their Physical Measurement and Efficiency Test (PMET) and written examination. This move comes even as the status of an additional 7,939 vacancies remains stalled due to pending litigation. An official statement released by the Lieutenant Governor's office on Tuesday emphasized the urgency of not unduly delaying the appointments of the qualified candidates.
The Lieutenant Governor has further mandated the organization of a dedicated medical camp within a week's time to facilitate the medical tests of these candidates. The prompt handover of appointment letters is also being prioritized. It is noteworthy that the LG had approved the enrollment of 10,285 Home Guard Volunteers in January 2024, which included a provision for 33.33 per cent reservation for women, highlighting his commitment to increasing workforce diversity.
In January 2024, an advertisement calling for the filling of these 10,285 vacancies was issued, attracting 1,09,001 applicants, of whom only 32,511 reported for the PMET. In the interim, legal challenges led some applicants to approach the High Court, resulting in a status quo order from the Court. Nevertheless, the 2,346 candidates who are not affected by these legal matters have been approved for appointments, pending medical tests. The Lieutenant Governor has instructed the Director General of Home Guards to promptly address the remaining 7,939 vacancies, following the High Court's guidance in related cases, ensuring expedited resolutions.
