In a landmark move for regional connectivity, the Central government has officially designated the Darranga land check post in Assam's Tamulpur district as an Immigration Check Post, permitting entry and exit for all passengers with valid documents. This follows the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950, and marks a significant step in facilitating smoother immigration processes, as announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday.
From November 1, 2024, the Chief Immigration Officer of the Bureau of Immigration will assume the role of 'Civil Authority' for Darranga Land Immigration Check Post. This appointment, empowered by sub-clause (2) of Clause 2 of the Foreigners Order, 1948, aims to streamline immigration and bolster border management.
The Darranga check post is historically crucial due to its location near the international border, serving as an essential link for trade and human movement. As northeastern states like Assam border countries such as Bhutan and Bangladesh, Darranga emerges as a vital node for connectivity and economic exchanges. This initiative aligns with the Indian government's strategy to fortify border security and foster regional economic development.
