The Maldives anticipates significant financial support from India in 2025, with the Indian government expected to contribute MVR 1.6 billion in grant aid, accounting for 72% of the total foreign aid to the archipelago nation, according to local reports.
The State Budget 2025, submitted by President Mohamed Muizzu's administration, outlines an anticipated MVR 2.25 billion in international grant aid, with India as the leading contributor. China's contribution is estimated at MVR 502 million, representing 22% of the projected aid, while funds are also expected from other allies like Japan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the Netherlands.
This generous support follows a series of substantial financial aids from India. Earlier, India extended USD 400 million during Muizzu's visit and facilitated a currency swap agreement. In May and September, India extended the Treasury Bills subscription by USD 100 million for the Maldives for another year.
