In a significant development, Indian troops commenced patrols in the Demchok sector of eastern Ladakh on Friday, following a mutual agreement with China to initiate coordinated patrols. This move marks a promising phase in the bilateral relations of the two nations, who have previously engaged in a tense standoff.
The patrols signify a strategic step towards peace, with Indian Army sources confirming upcoming patrolling operations in the Depsang sector. This coordinated approach ensures mutual awareness of patrol schedules. Previously, a gesture of goodwill was exchanged, with both armies sharing sweets at multiple border locations to mark Diwali.
The disengagement has been warmly received by local leaders, including Ladakh MP Haji Hanifa, who emphasized the desire for stability along the border. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi highlighted the meticulous process required to restore the April 2020 status quo, emphasizing disengagement, de-escalation, and buffer zone management as key components.
This framework for reducing tensions reflects ongoing dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong acknowledged the natural challenges in relations between neighboring countries, focusing on the importance of constructive dialogue.
