Nepal has set a bold target to generate 28,500 megawatts of hydroelectric power by the year 2035, aiming to boost foreign currency earnings through electricity exports. This ambitious roadmap has been presented to the Cabinet and highlights the pivotal role of the central government in achieving this goal, according to Deepak Khadka, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation.
Khadka announced confirmed agreements with India for 10,000 MW and with Bangladesh for 40 MW, with plans underway to increase the Bangladesh agreement to 6,000 - 7,000 MW. As domestic power demand in Nepal is expected to surpass 13,000 MW in a decade, the initiative marks a strategic move to fully exploit the country's abundant water resources and foster economic prosperity.
The government, dedicated to promoting renewable energy, is drafting the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Act to resolve issues within the alternative energy sector. Minister Khadka affirmed the government's commitment to achieving the complete electrification target while utilizing its hydro capabilities for regional power trade.
