In a poignant incident during a counter-terror operation on October 28 in Jammu and Kashmir's Akhnoor, Phantom, a Belgian Malinois sniffer dog with the Indian Army, made the ultimate sacrifice while pursuing terrorists. Born in May 2020 and inducted in August 2022, Phantom had been instrumental in various missions and succumbed to injuries while aiding troops.

The operation commenced early in the morning when terrorists ambushed an army convoy in Battal's dense jungles, aiming to disrupt Diwali festivities. This attack was part of a broader strategy by Pakistan-backed groups to challenge the Army's dominance. The Army's swift response, supported by increased troop density and counter-infiltration measures, forced terrorists into the forest. Reinforcements included special forces, with Phantom crucially tracking the terrorists through challenging terrain, detecting explosives, and identifying escape routes.

Tragically, during a confrontation, Phantom sustained fatal injuries while protecting troops. His actions were vital in containing the terrorists, underscoring the bravery of canine warriors. Senior officials honored Phantom's sacrifice, recognizing his role in the successful mission, supported by advanced technology, preventing any troop casualties and maintaining peace during Diwali.
