Turkey's Efforts to Mediate Black Sea Shipping and Peace Talks
President Erdogan of Turkey is trying to restart negotiations over Black Sea shipping and promote peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Despite previous agreements that allowed Ukrainian grain exports, Russia withdrew, citing issues with its own exports. Erdogan stresses the importance of resuming diplomacy to achieve ceasefire.
In recent developments, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has made a renewed effort to open discussions concerning Black Sea shipping amidst ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Erdogan's proposals come as he seeks to foster peace talks between the two nations.
At the BRICS summit held in Kazan, Erdogan, alongside U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, reiterated the significance of reinvigorating cooperation on maritime matters. These efforts are underscored by the Black Sea Grain Initiative, mediated by Turkey and the U.N. in 2022, which successfully facilitated Ukrainian grain exports despite wartime conditions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Erdogan's proposal and expressed a willingness to review it. However, Russia remains firm on its position, having recently withdrawn from the grain deal over concerns about its exports. Erdogan remains hopeful, prioritizing peace negotiations for the benefit of both parties.
