Delhi witnessed a blanket of smog on Friday as air quality took a nosedive, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching a concerning level of 283 at 8 a.m. Specific areas recorded alarmingly high AQI figures, including Anand Vihar at 218, Punjabi Bagh at 245, India Gate at 276, and Jhilmil Industrial Area at 288.
Residents expressed mounting health concerns as the pollution persists. Shree Krishna, visiting India Gate, noted a gradual increase in pollution over recent days. 'You can always feel the dust while breathing,' he lamented. Many, including Kalyani Tiwari, pointed to worsening respiratory issues. 'I've been facing headaches and breathing problems,' she disclosed, urging the government to clean the rivers before festivities exacerbate the situation.
Rakesh Kumar warned that without immediate action, post-Diwali pollution would become unbearable. Other residents called for better coordination between the government and the public, stressing the need for stricter pollution control measures. Toxic foam was also reported in the Yamuna River. Efforts by the Public Works Department, like sprinkling water in affected areas, continue, while the Commission for Air Quality Management implements Stage II GRAP measures across the region.
