On Monday, 17 junior doctors made their way to Nabanna in Howrah district to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Their journey is part of ongoing protests following the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The doctors, who have been on a hunger strike for 15 days, are calling for both justice and healthcare reform.
As the meeting loomed, Dr. Aqeeb Ashraf, a junior doctor, expressed hope for a fruitful outcome, indicating that even a brief discussion could suffice to advance their demands. They plan to present evidence to the chief minister, seeking the start of meaningful healthcare reforms.
The murder of the trainee doctor has triggered widespread protests across West Bengal. State Congress President Subhankar Sarkar voiced optimism that a resolution could be reached, urging dialogue without rigidity. Meanwhile, the incident has fueled a political clash between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Mamata Banerjee's government, with the BJP demanding her resignation.
