The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by Arvind Kejriwal, challenging a Gujarat High Court decision that refused to quash criminal defamation summons issued to him by Gujarat University. The defamation case stems from Kejriwal's comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's academic qualifications.

The bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti cited the need for consistency, especially after a similar plea by AAP leader Sanjay Singh was previously dismissed. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, defending Kejriwal, argued that no defamatory statements were made against the university.

The defamation charges followed remarks about the disclosure of public figures' degrees, with the Gujarat University filing a case against both Kejriwal and Singh. The High Court's earlier refusal to dismiss the summons prompted Kejriwal to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court, maintaining his position against the criminal proceedings.
