India must significantly enhance its power generation capacity, aiming for a four-fold increase to 2,100 gigawatts by 2047, said Union Power Minister Manohar Lal on Monday.

Current total capacity is approximately 453 gigawatts, with a forecasted peak demand of 260 gigawatts. However, this year's demand peaks have fallen short due to unexpected weather conditions.

Subhrakant Panda, former Ficci president, highlighted the potential growth in the renewable energy sector, emphasizing the importance of local manufacturing and R&D investment. The minister unveiled the National Electricity Plan, targeting substantial expansions in transmission to support significant renewable energy integration.
