NATO is poised to initiate its yearly nuclear exercise, Steadfast Noon, featuring F-35A fighter jets and B-52 bombers from 13 member nations. This drill, hosted by Belgium and The Netherlands, underscores NATO's commitment to nuclear preparedness in the face of escalating rhetoric from Russia's Vladimir Putin.
Taking place in the North Sea area, Steadfast Noon will involve around 2,000 military personnel carrying out simulated missions without live weapons. Despite heightened nuclear threats from Russia since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, NATO maintains that this exercise is not a reaction to recent declarations but part of an annual routine.
Assistant Secretary General Angus Lapsley emphasized the importance of such exercises to demonstrate NATO's nuclear capabilities and maintain credible deterrence against potential adversaries. While the organization reinforces its nuclear deterrence, it also aims to deter adversaries through conventional means.
