Tensions Rise Over EU-China EV Tariff Clash
China's Commerce Ministry criticized the EU's tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, labeling them as unfair, but maintained hope for resolution through negotiations. China proposed a flexible price commitment to alleviate EU concerns over market saturation of cheap Chinese EVs and prevent trade conflicts.
China's Commerce Ministry has harshly criticized the European Union's decision to impose tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, calling the measures 'unfair' and 'unreasonable'. Despite this, the ministry expressed optimism that both sides could resolve the matter through further negotiations.
The ministry mentioned that technical-level consultations with the European Union were ongoing and would resume shortly. It reaffirmed China's firm opposition to the EU's proposed tariff ruling but recognized the EU's willingness to find a negotiated solution.
To address European concerns about an influx of inexpensive Chinese EVs, China has suggested a 'flexible price commitment' on imports. The Commerce Ministry stated that this approach could prevent an escalation of trade tensions, emphasizing China's readiness for dialogue and maximum flexibility during consultations.
