The picturesque Dang district in Gujarat has set a new precedent by becoming a fully natural farming region under the 'Aapnu Dang, Prakrutik Dang' campaign initiated in 2021. The local government, in collaboration with the agriculture department, has enabled farmers to transition from chemical fertilizers to natural farming methods, resulting in substantial economic benefits.
Farmers such as Yashwantbhai Sahare from Bhurapani village have pioneered these eco-friendly practices. By participating in training sessions across Gujarat, Sahare has embraced techniques in natural farming and animal husbandry, which have allowed him to cultivate crops like rice and soybeans while minimizing chemical use. He also serves as a mentor, educating others in his district.
The government has mobilized substantial resources for this transformation. Sanjay Bhagariya, Deputy Director of Agriculture in Dang, stated that over 16,000 farmers were trained in the 2023-24 year alone, with continued efforts in subsequent years. Initiatives also include modern mechanization schemes, aiding farmers like Sitarambhai Chaurya of Ahwa to access essential agricultural equipment with government subsidies, significantly improving productivity and economic status.
In an economically challenged community, subsidies have allowed families like Sitarambhai's to invest in modern farming equipment such as tractors and rotavators. Sitarambhai's daughter-in-law, Kusum, highlighted the role of subsidies in facilitating affordable equipment acquisition, aiding in sustainable farming practices.
The success story of Dang offers a viable model for other regions aiming to embrace natural farming. This transformation underscores the government's crucial role in supporting agricultural empowerment and sustainable development.
