An employee of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, under Russian control in southern Ukraine, was fatally targeted in a car bomb blast on Friday. Russian officials claim the attack, which took the life of Andrei Korotkiy, was orchestrated by Ukrainian forces.
The Investigative Committee of Russia announced that Korotkiy, a security department member, died after a bomb exploded beneath his car outside his home in Enerhodar, the location of the nuclear facility. A criminal investigation has commenced regarding his death.
The plant's leadership holds Ukraine accountable, although Kyiv has yet to respond. The U.N.'s nuclear arm has emphasized the need for restraint in the high-stakes situation as both sides have previously exchanged accusations of sabotage.
