In a significant stride towards water conservation, Kanharpuri village in the Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh has transformed the Mura pond into the state's largest Amrit Sarovar. This ambitious project, arising from a survey indicating water scarcity risks, has markedly boosted the region's water retention capabilities.
Through cooperative efforts between the local Gram Panchayat and the South Eastern Central Railway (SECR), the expansion of Mura pond increased its water capacity from 32,400 to 57,800 cubic meters, revitalizing over 50 acres of farmland. This initiative not only improved irrigation but also facilitated livestock rearing, contributing to the village's economic prosperity.
The collaboration allowed SECR to extract materials for railway track development, compensating the Panchayat with a significant royalty. This mutual arrangement highlights an innovative model of income generation through infrastructure development, underscoring efficient resource management and community involvement in environmental conservation under the central government's water conservation mission.
